I’m in that special time where I’ve agreed to buy a project car but haven’t yet parted with the cash...that special time where anything is possible because you’ve still got the money and don’t yet realize how broke you’ll be just by buying the car.
Because the machinations of my work allows me a little down time, I spent some of my day today researching some things about the Barracuda, and some things that I want for it.
For one, I found out that my transmission is an A833 and the Hurst shifter attached is a factory unit. The A833 is apparently WAY overbuilt for my little 273...spline count aside, it’s the same transmission you’d find in Chrysler engines up to and including the Hemi (which I’m sure received some special beefing up). Because it’s an A-body, the gear ratios are a little different...biggest difference seems to be a 3.09 1st gear where everything else got like a 2.76. That’s pretty cool, since I’ll have a 273 and even with the things I want to do, that little shorter gear will be nice.
I think the first major thing is going to have to be wheels. The ones on it are, I believe, 13"...and it turns out that 13" tires are tough to find. Tire Rack seems to have trailer tires and racing slicks without really anything inbetween.
My favorites ones so far are these:
Absent Sprints, or something like them, because of this:
My former ‘69 Corvair, which is kinda the whole reason I bought the Barracuda. I sold the Corvair instead of the Jaguar I had at the same time, which was totally the wrong call. But hey, it worked out, and now I’ve got a V8.
I'm gonna have to pull a Johnny Cash and get this car together one piece at a time...gonna cost me a few dimes though.

What about racing steelies? You can get DOT approved ones for not a lot of money.

Interesting. I thought the big hp cars had 727s in them. You learn something new every day!

727 was the automatic, and a straight up BEAST of a transmission. Mine is a 4 speed.

It would look great on regular steelies. I’ll have to see how wide I can go...Ill be a little limited by the fender skirting on the rear wheels and I don’t really want to jack up the back.
Also, how fucking nasty is that Nova? Lord have mercy.

I paid the deposit, I’m going to pay the remainder cash on the 18th when I pick it up. Can’t wait. I’m at least considering just freeing up the engine and stuffing it back in there as-is so I can drive it a little for the summer, but I probably just ought to do it right.

Ah! Thank you. I saw “A” and assumed it was an automatic. I’m absolutely clueless about Mopars.

I'm like that with GM...I don't understand any of their nomenclature.

I’m ok with GM until the more modern stuff though I can get confused by all of the RPO codes, L88, L84,L76 etc, etc. Anybody who has all of those memorized has too much time on their hands.

The only GM RPO codes I know are LG4 (a carbureted 305), LB9 (a hi-po 305), and 9C1...which is the police package for the Caprice.

I know L88 (427 with aluminum heads), ZL1 (427 with aluminum block as well as heads) LT-1 (solid lifter 350), along with LS5 and LS6 (medium and high performance 454s respectively). That’s about it.

It may be a MOPAR cliché but I always liked these:
Some 15" rallye wheels would give you plenty of room for aspen/diplomat disc brakes. And they tuck pretty well, too.

Rally wheels are like the 1B to the slotted mag’s 1A. There’s a guy near me on CL selling a pair with some awesome vintage looking Mickey Thompson drag tires, plus he’s got three more wheels that need to be repainted and I’ll need a spare. They’re 14", holding out for 15s would probably be worth it though.

14" rallys would be fine, too. It’d look pretty sweet and still has plenty of room for discs up front.
